Narcissism is a personality disorder that is characterised by a grandiose sense of self-importance, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. People with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) often have a distorted view of themselves and their abilities, and they may believe that they are superior to others. They may also be very sensitive to criticism, and they may lash out or become defensive when they are challenged.

While there are many types of narcissists, here are the five most common:

-
Grandiose narcissist: This type of narcissist has an inflated sense of self-importance and believes they are superior to everyone around them. They often brag about their achievements and demand admiration from others. They have a sense of entitlement and lack empathy for others.
-
Malignant narcissist: This type of narcissist is often manipulative, sadistic, and takes pleasure in causing harm to others. They often display extreme behaviors that are harmful to themselves and those around them.
-
Vulnerable narcissist: A vulnerable narcissist has a fragile sense of self-esteem. They often feel inadequate and seek validation and approval from others. They can display victim-like behavior and may become hostile if they do not receive the attention they crave.
-
Covert narcissist: This type of narcissist is often more subtle in their behaviour and may appear humble and self-sacrificing. They have a grandiose sense of self-importance, but their behaviour is typically exhibited through acts of manipulation and control.
-
Communal narcissist: Unlike other narcissists, a communal narcissist views themselves as a selfless and caring person. They believe they are better than others because of their altruistic qualities and often use these qualities to manipulate and control others. They may also seek out positions of power within their community or group.

It is important to note that not all narcissists will exhibit all of the characteristics of their particular type, and they may also exhibit some of the other types too. Some narcissists may be more grandiose, while others may be more vulnerable. The type of narcissist that someone is will depend on a variety of factors, including their personality, their upbringing, and their life experiences.

Understanding the different types of narcissists and their behaviours, can help identify patterns of abusive behaviour in order to protect yourself from further harm.
